 Musicians->Indigo Girls: Indigo Girls to give 'Honor Our Earth' benefit concert at Shiprock
Posted on Tuesday, May 08 @ 18:25:36 CDT (2873 reads)

Native Music

AUTHOR: Amy Maestas, Herald Staff Writer

Contemporary folk/acoustic rock duo the Indigo Girls famously said years ago that they are activists first and musicians second. Their words have trailed them since that declaration, and Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have lived that attitude.

On May 21 in Shiprock, N.M., the Indigo Girls will be throwing their activist support behind the proposed Desert Rock Energy Facility, a coal-fired power plant slated to be built on the Navajo Nation 25 miles southwest of Farmington. Ray and Saliers will perform a benefit concert called Honor the Earth. The intent is to lend support to grass-roots American Indian groups working to prevent the building of Desert Rock.

The drum has been significant to all native nations for thousands of years. It is a sacred item. The drum is man's connection to the earth, and symbolizes the life force of creation.

For centuries the drum has been used to amplify the voice and synchronize the heart beat of man to the natural rhythms of the earth.

 Musicians->BlackFire: Black Fire, Navajo musicians
Posted on Wednesday, January 16 @ 00:40:51 CST (8887 reads)

Native Music

Author: Allen Ignatius Boudreaux III

Black Fire is a trio of Navajo punkers who are basically very underground, very native american, rage against the machine (before Zack Delarocha left).

Except they're better, not because of their music, which was simple, hard, feedback-laden screaming punk rock (plus a small bit of navajo chanting thrown in for variety) and would have been serious mosh pit music back in the day, or even tonight if there had been more than twelve people in the room, all of us old enough to have the "Pits are for kids! I'm too old to slam" mentality.

They're as good or better than Rage because these guys had real live righteous anger, which is something I admire a great deal, and it's always inspiring to see.

Native Music

AUTHOR: Hannah Allam
St. Paul Pioneer Press

When Germaine Tremmel and Sharon Mountain organized "Gathering of the Heartbeat'' in Minneapolis seven years ago, they created an annual retreat where American Indian women could celebrate tradition and challenge taboos by singing around a ceremonial drum.

Dozens of people from across the country and Canada now participate in the annual gathering, kept alive by an increasing number of women turning to the drum and other sacred objects usually reserved for men.
